What this 'Netflix Special' is, is an intimate dive into the brain of the written, director, editor and actor; Bo Burnham.
It's a perversion of his mind, a creative and ingenious reflection upon himself and the world around him. It's surrealism meets existentialism for 87 bizarre yet enthralling minutes of comedy.
But not just any comedy; Bo brings his trademark cynical, highly self-aware brand of musical comedy that has made his previous specials so successful.
But this special is vastly different to his previous ones. Burnham uses his space and equipment very uniquely, particularly in such a confined space, to create an eerie and personal series of songs and sketches.
Bitter sweet is a near perfect way to describe this. The mix of lighthearted jokes and dark, serious topics blend so well, a familiar trait for Bo's work it must be said.
I don't think I've ever reviewed a Netflix special before, but then, I don't think there's ever been a Netflix special like this before either. And I doubt there ever will be again.
Each scene felt like a step deeper into Bo's mind, a step further from sanity. But it works. So incredibly well. It feels almost like a theatre production, building and building towards it's conclusion.
The whole thing feels like Burnham looking at Burnham. And if anyone should be looking at Burnham, it's you.
